The USS Liberty Incident – 1967
Today – June 8, 2009 – is the 42nd anniversary of the attack by warplanes and torpedo boats of the Israeli armed forces, on the USS Liberty. The particulars of the case will never be known to the public at large. What is certain is that the Liberty was sailing in international waters, the weather was clear, the ship was clearly marked, and the US flag on the fantail was flying unfurled. This notwithstanding, the Liberty was repeatedly bombed, strafed, rocketed and torpedoed by the IDF - for two hours – while nearby US forces, who were aware of what was happening, were ordered to stand down.
*On the surface* it makes no sense. Why would Israel attack a ship of its closest ally in a way that could only harm their relationship at a time when America’s good will was desperately needed? (the attack happened in the midst of the Six Day War). However, gentle reader, things are not always as they seem: Was the US playing a deeper game in the region and got hoisted on its own petard? Were the Israelis, in a false flag operation, trying to sink the Liberty, wishing to blame it on the Arabs – as they did with the bombing of the King David Hotel, and the attempted bombing of US facilities in Cairo in 1956? Or, was it a tragically genuine case of “friendly fire”?
The cover-up was immediate and extensive – going all the way to the Johnson White House. Israel eventually paid 13 million USD in indemnities to the US Federal Government, the 174 wounded survivors of the attack, and the family members of the 34 men killed. Which means they simply returned some of America’s tax dollars.
Interestingly, the Rear Admiral Commanding the nearest US Navy carrier task force ordered American fighter planes, which were only fifteen minutes away, to fly to the defense of the Liberty; however, his order was countermanded by the Commander of US Naval forces in Europe. The carrier Admiral was George S. Morrison – the father of rock legend Jim Morrison. The admiral who countermanded the order was John S. McCain Jr. – the father of the 2008 Republican US Presidential candidate, John McCain III.
Rear Admiral Morrison fiercely opposed the official report – which exonerated Israel of any wrongdoing; and, though he was at the time of the incident the youngest admiral in the US Navy, he never rose to higher rank.
